ABOUT THE COUNCIL

The Town Council consists of 19 members who are elected every four years with the Town being divided into 5 wards. The Mayor is elected from within the Council and is appointed for a period of 1 year.

Council meetings are held in the Council Chamber at 24 Victoria Avenue on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 7.00pm. A number of sub-committees meet on a regular basis to discuss specific issues for example Tourism and Events and Civic Amenities. The Town Council actively encourages positive public participation in its activities and all meetings of the Council and its Committees are open to the Press and public.

The Town Council has a number of roles and responsibilities, one of which includes provision of summer and Christmas decorative lighting. Some bus shelters, wayside seating and litter bins alongside the maintenance of local village greens also fall under the auspices of the Town Council. In addition the Town Council provides allotments sites at three locations, which provides gardening facilities for approximately 100 gardeners.

Another very important duty of the Town Council is commenting on planning applications submitted to Bridgend Borough Council (the planning authority) and the Town Council assists various local organisations and charities by way of making small grants and donations.

The Town Council regularly works with local services and organisations seeking ways in which it can help foster and encourage community spirit in order to enhance the Town’s facilities and ensure that Porthcawl continues to be a pleasant place for residents and tourists alike.
